Beth Chatto is justly famous for her pioneering work in creating a beautiful and extensive garden in soil which at one time was considered useless for gardening. The gardens she created around her home in Essex are a riot of colour almost all the year round, and the programme reflects this as it follows a year in the life of the gardens.
I was asked therefore to write music which reflected the varying seasons as they were seen in the face of the plants in the gardens.
